Ambassador Leclerc meets Pope XIV, invites him to Vanuatu

VANUATU'S SPECIAL ENVOY TO the Russian Federation and the State of Israel, Bernard Leclerc, recently met Pope Leo XIV and invited him to consider a visit to Vanuatu.

According to Director of the Ambassador's Office, Bruno Mancel, the meeting followed the funeral of Pope Francis. During the inauguration ceremony of Pope Leo XIV's pontificate on Sunday, 18 May, the Vatican officially accredited Ambassador Leclerc to the Holy See.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and External Trade, Marc Ati, upon being notified, directed Ambassador Leclerc to represent the Head of State, the Government, and the people of Vanuatu at the ceremony.

Director Mancel acknowledged the Minister's efforts to rebuild Vanuatu's international diplomatic standing and described Ambassador Leclerc as an experienced diplomat well- suited for the role.

The ambassador's travel and participation were coordinated in collaboration with Italian authorities.

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs again assigned liaison officer Marianna Caputo, who had previously supported Leclerc during an earlier visit.

On arrival in Rome, the ambassador was received at Fiumicino Airport and escorted to his residence under police escort.

The next day, he was received by Monsignor Javier Domingo Fernández González, who directed him to his assigned seat.

Ambassador Leclerc was seated near representatives from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Ambassador Leclerc was introduced to Pope Leo XIV. He conveyed the people of Vanuatu's interest in welcoming the Pope for an official visit.

Following this exchange, Ambassador Leclerc met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See. The Cardinal noted that the Vatican is considering a trip to Oceania and would take Vanuatu's invitation into account.

On behalf of Vanuatu, Ambassador Leclerc presented Pope Leo XIV with a book from 1896 about the youth of Pope Leo XIII.

The Ambassador boarded his plane on Sunday afternoon, pleased with the outcome of the mission assigned to him by Minister Ati, and took time to thank his police escort and airport staff before departure.
